And the better-then-worse riddle? Solved. In the hospital he briefly improved — until his worried mom, seeing he still had a sore throat, gave him more of his "cough medicine" from home. More of the same poison. That's the second person who "screwed up," and the reason he relapsed.
This is the beautiful, infuriating punchline of the whole episode. The cough was the only real illness Brandon ever had — a nothing little cold. Everything else, the heart, the kidneys, the near-death — was caused by the medicine meant to treat it. One simple mix-up explained the entire pile.
